ASSET TRACKING
Small- and medium-sized fleets plan to invest in technology to help in a challenging economy. Smaller fleets risk losing their competitive edge if they do not invest in asset tracking. It’s no wonder owner-operators and smaller carriers are exiting the industry, leaving fleet managers to consider what technologies to invest in to secure the future of their fleets. About 62% of small- to medium-sized fleet owners cited inflation as the biggest obstacle to growth.
With trucking’s cost per mile rising beyond $2, fleets are looking for technological solutions to invest in to save every cent they can in a competitive market. Telematics providers said that fleets of all sizes must invest in up-to-date asset tracking and telematics solutions. As 47% of fleets surveyed prioritize investing in transportation management systems to more effectively manage and utilize their assets.
Trailer tracking can provide multiple, increasing levels of asset utilization and management, Taylor said. The most basic level is knowing where your trailers are. As fleet managers become more accustomed to the technology, they can “graduate’’. There are some private fleets that are using that because they want to make sure they’re using it for inventory management.
They want to know how much product is on that trailer. Less-than-truckload fleets “want to make sure that as they’re going through their loading process and that they’re loading every square inch of that trailer.” Taylor said Spireon has seen a large increase in small- and medium-sized businesses adopting trailer tracking in the last three years, and the past quarter’s sales were “through the roof” since fleets wanted to compete.
